Teens Rocking the World: Sydney Loew of Poketti
Sydney Lowe – Poketti Plushies
This may be somewhat of a spoiler, but as I was doing research for our upcoming Teen/Tween Gift Guide, I came across a company called Poketti. What I didn’t know at first is that this company was started by a 13-year-old girl named Sydney (hey! I have a 13-year-old Sydney, too!!) as well as her sister Toni and of course, head cheerleader, CEO and chauffeur – mom, Kris (hey! I’m a Kris(ten)!!) and Chief Speed Bump, Dad Chris (no lie, that’s what his card says). We thought it would be great to introduce you to Sydney as a Teen Rocking the World!
Sydney is the 14-year old “Cuteness Control Officer” of Poketti LLC. She was inspired by her 7th grade entrepreneurial class and then convinced her parents to turn her idea into a real company – Poketti Plushies. These plushies are adorable plush animal pillows with a useful back pocket to hold a phone, notebook, glasses, or anything you might look for in the morning. In order to get the business off the ground, they raised $20,000 on Kickstarter for manufacturing, and are now selling their first series of professionally hand-sewn products: Poketti™ Plushies with a Pocket. Series 1 includes Sydney the Penguin (because she’s obsessed with penguins), Toni the Bunny (sister Toni loves bunnies), Baxter the Puppy and Roxi the Kitty.
This is part of a speech that Sydney recently gave to a group of young entrepreneurs:
During the entrepreneurial project, I realized I love making people happy, while also making money. After the class was over, I thought, why not turn my design into a real business? My parents are both designers, but they’ve never made a product of their own. This could be an opportunity for all of us!
And with that, Poketti “Plushies with a Pocket” was born.
When naming our company, we wanted something clever and meaningful, and something that has never been used before. Of course, Pillow Pockets and Pocket Pals were taken as most “real” words are. So we started looking into other languages. My designs are simple and iconic, and have a Japanese quality, with the simple mouth and manga-style eyes. We found that Pocket in Japanese is Poketto. And in Italian, when you pluralize a noun, you change the ending “o” to an “i”, so we came up with Poketti. The website was available and the only thing that came up on Google Search was a random boulder. So, we started the trademark process and the name “Poketti” is now ours, not just the website, but it’s registered with the US Government!
Next we needed to structure our company. Because I’m under eighteen, I “hired” my mom as CEO and I took the title of CCO (Cuteness Control Officer). Our first major decision was which four animals to select for Series1. I am obsessed with penguins and my sister loves bunnies, so we had to make those. Then, we figured dogs and cats are classic. I have a long list of future animals and I hope I have the chance to release them in the future.
We can’t wait to see more of what Sydney does – we’re confident it will be a lot!! And stay posted to see Poketti Plushies on our Holiday Gift Guide – there may be a little treat in the Poketti pocket for one lucky reader!! In the meantime, why not give Sydney and Poketti some follow love and support!
